As a whole, the lack of a preseason generally leads to more unknowns than we see on a regular Opening Day, but it also has a potential on-field impact. Last year, we actually made it a point to avoid offenses whose quarterback had not thrown a pass in the preseason and, this year, that would mean that we avoid everyone! Obviously, it’s not practical — and it does level the playing field — but it’s something to keep in mind.
A Note from Mario: Last year, I started adding over-under picks to this column for any games that had a particular edge. These picks were decent, but do not have the same track record of the against-the-spread picks. I will continue to provide them as I see fit, but please do your research and play responsibly.
In the world of daily fantasy roster construction, ‘stacking’ players from the same team can often lead to big results. In this column of games to target in Week 1, Luke and Mario will give their thoughts on a few games that are worth watching for fantasy purposes, and whether they like the value or feel the game is getting too much attention.
Luke’s Top Games to Watch
Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons
Of every game this week, this is the only one that features two offenses with high-end quarterbacks and have most of their key players intact from last season. Russell Wilson is simply as good as it gets, and the limited practice reps this offseason shouldn’t do that much to slow him, Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf down. They are also strong at running back with Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde. Add in the new additions of Greg Olsen and Philip Dorset and this offense seems primed to hit the ground running and never slow down. Matt Ryan is back for another season under center for the Falcons, and his elite wide receiver duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should have no problem finding a routine. Hayden Hurst should be stepping into a prominent role left behind by Austin Hooper’s departure, and he seems poised for a breakout season after being stuck behind Mark Andrews in Baltimore. And then there is Todd Gurley. I may not be playing him this week, but if he can remain healthy and get anywhere near the elite level of play we’ve seen from him in the past, this offense is going to be hard to stop. This game, above all else, feels like one to target for plenty of fantasy points.
