Welcome back to the daily fantasy hockey morning coffee. I hope you had a profitable NFL or NBA weekend while the NHL took a break for three days. Tonight we have a 10-game slate to pick through for our DFS needs.
Tonight my top three teams I’ll look to stack are:
Washington Capitals @ New York Islanders (Washington -147, 5 o/u)
Dallas Stars @ Arizona Coyotes (Dallas -145 5.5 o/u)
Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils (Pittsburgh -142, 5.5 o/u)
The Washington Capitals get a New York Islanders team that has allowed a league fourth-worst 3.03 goals against per game. The Islanders have also only killed off penalties at a rate of 79.1 percent this season — seventh worst in the NHL. At home that number actually dips to 76.2 percent. I’ll look to the Washington power play as the basis for some of my rosters tonight:
Marcus Johansson $5.1K (13G, 11A, 7 PPP, 54 SOG)
Nicklas Backstrom $6.7K (9G, 20A, 13 PPP, 68 SOG)
T.J. Oshie $6.5K (10G, 5A, 4 PPP, 53 SOG)
Alex Ovechkin $8.8K (15G, 9A, 9 PPP, 125 SOG)
(D) John Carlson $5.7K (3G, 14A, 8 PPP, 81 SOG)
As a GPP play I’m going to have some lineups with New York skaters. Anders Lee/John Tavares/Josh Bailey have been very productive over their past three games scoring three goals while attempting 42 shots. Overall the Islanders make for an intriguing GPP option as they have scored nine goals over their past two games and beat the Capitals 4-2 in their last meeting.
New York has also scored three power play goals over their past three games while Washington has allowed nine power play goals in the month of December — they have allowed at least one power play goal in seven out of 11 games this month. With Lee, Tavares and Bailey all skating on New York’s top line and top power play unit I love them as a GPP stack tonight. The Islanders have averaged 3.09 goals per game this month and have allowed 3.18 goals per game — it certainly makes for an interesting game to stack from both teams.
