The team I have the most interest in tonight is the Washington Capitals. Washington and Colorado are both on the second night of back-to-backs and tonight I want to ride the hot hands of the Capitals. Washington has won seven of their past eight games and (not including Monday night’s game) have scored 14 goals over their past three games. In four games this month Washington has averaged a league fourth-best 4.50 goals for per game and their power play has clicked at a nice rate of 26.7 percent — including four power play goals over their past four games. On the season Washington boasts the sixth-best power play in the league scoring at a rate of 21.2 percent.
Both Washington and Colorado are on the second night of back-to-backs and what makes Colorado an interesting tournament options are the splits on back-to-backs. On the second night of back-to-backs (five times) Washington has allowed an average of 3.80 goals against per game — though Colorado hasn’t been much better in terms of goals against per game on the second night of back-to-backs with an average of 3.67 goals against per game. But Colorado has averaged 3.33 goals for per game while Washington has only averaged 1.80 goals for per game.
The ALEX OVECHKIN/NICKLAS BACKSTROM/TOM WILSON line has been impressive. Ovechkin and Backstrom were popular last night with Ovechkin seeing a 21.1 percent ownership rate and Backstrom seeing a 15.7 percent ownership rate. But with three more games on the slate tonight I expect to see that ownership come down. Per LeftWingLock, over their past 10 games this line has been the most productive line in the NHL with nine goals for and 118 shot attempts for. I like this line for both cash and tournament plays.
