Welcome to the Monday morning edition of the daily fantasy hockey morning coffee. I hope you had a profitable weekend. We start the week with a tidy six-game slate to work with for our DFS needs.
Tonight’s Slate:
Detroit Red Wings @ New Jersey Devils (New Jersey, -160, 5.5 over/under)
Colorado Avalanche @ Toronto Maple Leafs (Toronto, -170, 6 over/under)
Ottawa Senators @ Minnesota Wild (Minnesota, -200, 5.5 over/under)
Tampa Lightning @ Chicago Blackhawks (Tampa Bay, -135, 6 over/under)
New York Islanders @ Arizona Coyotes (New York, -125, 6.5 over/under)
Buffalo Sabres @ Calgary Flames (Calgary, -210, 5.5 over/under)
The team I want to start much of my roster construction around is the Calgary Flames. Tonight the Flames get a Bufalo Sabres team that has allowed a league-worst 4.50 goals against in January (36 goals against in just eight games played), have allowed a league-worst nine power play goals against in January, have lost seven of their past eight games, and allowed seven goals against twice in a recent four-game span.
Over their past 10 games the Sabres have a CF% of 46.40 percent — fourth-worst in the NHL. In 5v5 situations Buffalo actually has a SCA/60 of 26.15 which is the sixth-best in the league, and in penalty kill situations their SCA/60 of 47.63 is actually the fourth-best in the NHL over the past 10 games. So what’s the disconnect between these numbers and the fact Buffalo has been the worst team on the penalty kill this month? The short answer is goaltending. Buffalo’s team save percentage on the penalty kill is a league-worst 75.00 percent. In 5v5 situations Buffalo’s team save percentage is a league fifth-worst 90.59 percent.
In January Calgary has scored a league seventh-best 3.43 goals for per game, have won seven of their past eight games, and have a power play that is showing signs of life with three power play goals over their past four games.
